About 1300 Island Highway

Connective is proud to share that we’ll be operating a new Homeless Encampment Action Response Temporary Housing (HEARTH) program at 1300 Island Highway in Nanaimo. In partnership with BC Housing, this program will provide housing and support services to 50 people experiencing or at risk of homelessness in the community.

Set to open in mid-2025, the program will have 24/7 staff and offer meal programs, life skills and employment training, health care referrals, and connections to community services. The site will use modular construction, where each unit is a private room, and residents will have access to shared washrooms, onsite laundry facilities, and common areas.

FAQs

Who will be living here?

People who experience homelessness are as diverse as any other of your neighbours.

Residents will be selected through a thorough assessment process to ensure the program matches the level and types of support that each resident needs. People currently staying in shelters will be prioritized, so that those spaces can be freed up for folks sheltering outdoors.

What training do Connective staff have?

Connective staff will be equipped with training and skills to support residents. As required by BC Housing, this includes, but is not limited to: crisis prevention training; First Aid/CPR; mental health first aid training; domestic violence and safety planning; substance use awareness and safety training; and trauma-informed training.

Who is Connective?

Connective is a social services nonprofit with 90 years of experience supporting people across BC. We are proud to offer a range of holistic programs to meet the unique needs of people in our communities.

What rules and restrictions do residents have?

Like everyone in the community, residents are expected to treat neighbours with respect. Staff will be onsite 24/7 and will work with residents and neighbours to foster good neighbourhood relations.

Residents sign a Program Agreement that outlines behaviour expectations especially as it relates to the health and safety of themselves and others.
