About 1450 West 12th Supportive Housing

Connective’s 114-unit supportive housing program at 1450 West 12 provides housing and 24/7 supports for seniors and equity-denied populations including Indigenous people and women.

Connective staff are on site 24/7 to provide support services, such as meal programs, life and employment skills training, homecare services, harm reduction services, and cultural supports. The program also has an on-site Indigenous liaison who provides culturally appropriate services and support.

People who live here may choose to stay permanently, or may later decide to move into more independent housing. We’re committed to using innovative and flexible approaches to help residents develop the tools to meet their self-identified goals and maintain housing long-term.

We are excited to be a part of the South Granville community, and to work with neighbours and our wider community to ensure the program has a positive impact on residents, and the neighbourhood. If you would like to receive ongoing program updates, please sign up for our newsletter at connective.ca/1450-signup.

FAQs

Why was this location chosen?

  • Given the urgent need for supportive homes in the community, it’s vital that we pursue every opportunity available to increase availability. New construction cannot keep up with the demand for affordable and supportive housing (Vancouver Sun Article)

  • 1450 West 12th Ave was vacant at the time of purchase, and includes a range of features which make it ideal for supportive housing, including bachelor suites with in-unit bathrooms, common areas, office space for staff and a commercial kitchen

Why is this needed?

  • 22% of those experiencing homelessness in the community are seniors over 60, according to the 2023 Homeless Count

  • The housing crisis has had detrimental effects on the well-being of seniors who have limited financial resources

  • Seniors support agencies have seen a significant increase in requests for assistance due to increased isolation and housing insecurity

What happened to the seniors that were living at Chalmers?

  • This building was vacant at the time of purchase, so no one was displaced

  • Chalmers closed in 2022, and residents were previously relocated to Rideau Residence at 1850 Rosser Ave. in Burnaby as a part of a separate 2022 partnership with the Province and BC Housing.

What is Supportive Housing?

  • Supportive housing provides permanent housing with access to 24/7 on-site supports. Residents have access to their own self-contained studio apartment, pay rent, and sign a program agreement.

  • Once in supportive housing, people report improvements in access to employment, income, education, mental health supports and life-skills.

Who will be living here?

  • This program specifically will prioritize seniors and equity-denied populations such as Indigenous people and women

  • People who experience homelessness are as varied as any other neighbour. They may be seniors, people with disabilities, people with employment but no housing, people who are working through mental health concerns and/or substance use

How are residents selected?

  • Residents apply to this program through BC Housing

  • Priority will be given to seniors who are already BC Housing tenants but wishing to move into a more seniors-focused building

  • We ensure that the housing and services provided by the program match the support services that each resident needs

Who is Connective?

  • Connective is a social services nonprofit with a long history of supporting people in Vancouver. Our housing programs are person-centered, meaning we tailor our services to the people we serve. We work with residents to identify needs, goals, and barriers, and help them connect with the necessary supports and resources
