Education & Employment

Often members of our community face compounding and intersectional barriers that hinder their ability to find and maintain employment and education opportunities. As we assist people to meet their employment and educational goals, we are determined to address and reduce these barriers using a person-centered approach.

EMPLOYMENT

Our employment programs offer specialized skill development, education, certification and training opportunities to individuals facing complex barriers. We assist people to identify, work towards, and achieve their career goals, and provide comprehensive support along the way.

ACES (Acquiring Community-Based Employment Skills) is a province-wide Connective program, which is delivered by regional service delivery partners in eight communities across BC. ACES provides employability and life-skills workshops, safety certificate and skills enhancement training, and supported work experiences to individuals facing multiple barriers to employment.

 

Participants work with ACES staff to identify their career goals and gain access to the skills, certificate courses, and job readiness supports necessary for them to achieve those goals. ACES participants also receive ongoing support and advocacy for success in long-term employment.

 

In thanks to funding from the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training, our ACES programs support youth and young adults; survivors of domestic violence and abuse; and individuals experiencing barriers to employment through certificate-based training, life-skills and employment readiness workshops including:

  • Assistance with resume and cover letter development
  • Interview skills training
  • Supported work experience
  • One-to-one support and mentorship
  • Continued training and follow up supports
The goals of ACES  are to:
  • Support people facing multiple barriers to employment to acquire the skills and opportunity to gain meaningful work
  • Provide support which assists people to secure and maintain sustainable employment
  • Provide employability and life-skills workshops, safety certificate and skills enhancement training, and supported work experience
Admission criteria:
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Live in British Columbia, and be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Be unemployed, underemployed, or employed in a low skilled occupation
  • Not participating in another government-funded labour market program, and not a full-time student

An International award-winning program that assists youth aged 15-30 to gain life skills, certifications, and training to succeed in the job market. Bladerunners supports cohorts of six youth through intensive six-week training to help them achieve their self-identified employment goals and prepare them for the workforce. 

 

Life skills include goal setting, planning, motivation, self-esteem, communication skills, morals, ethics and conflict resolution. Industry certification and training are offered include: OFA level 1, Transportation Endorsement, Food Safe, Serving it Right, WHMIS, WorldHost Training Services and Sales Training.

The Bladerunners program: 

  • Assists both Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth (15 to 30 years old) to obtain sustainable employment 
  • Provides support and training to participants so they can obtain and sustain full-time employment  
  • Provides job readiness training, life skills, job-specific training, job placements and job coaching to assist participants to overcome barriers to employment and maintain long-term attachment to the workforce 
  • Provides person-centered support based upon individual 
  • Provides emergency or enhanced short-term supports tailored to the needs of individual participants who have one or more additional barriers to employment, or who require specialized training to be placed into a specific job opportunity, or whose environment requires additional resources (such as bus passes, emergency food/nutrition assistance, emergency childcare), to ensure long-term attachment to the workforce

EDUCATION

Our education programs provide participants with the knowledge and skill-based certifications and training needed to achieve their professional, personal, and educational goals. 

STOP is a domestic violence program based on a long-established model for domestic violence reduction and prevention. Participation is voluntary, and participants can self-refer or be referred by other community programs or services. The program helps establish positive outlooks and behaviours through focusing on accountability and communication skills.  

 

Provided at no cost to participants, the STOP program runs in a 14-week unit format with topics that include: 

  • Defining abuse 
  • Emotional literacy 
  • Anger 
  • Communication: Self Talk, Non-Violent and Interpersonal 
  • Self Esteem 
  • Partners perspective 
  • Accountability
  • Toxic shame 
  • Relapse prevention
